MARITIME
SHIPPING IMPACT
—
Maritime shipping emits around 1,000 million tons of C02 annually – About >3% of global GHG emissions
AIR FREIGHT
IMPACT
—
Air Freight emits approximately 600 million tons of C02 per year.
A CLIMATE
EMERGENCY
—
By 2050, martime shipping could represent 17% of global CO2 emissions if nothing changes.
1. Unmatched speed and reliability
VELA operates a transatlantic line capable of delivering containers 2 to 4 times faster than conventional sea freight, with port-to-port transit under 15 days.
2. Zéro carbon emissions (certified)
96%+ reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to fossil-fueled ships. VELA ships are 100% wind-powered, with no fossil fuels, no offsets, and no greenwashing — just truly clean shipping.
3. Financial resiliance & esg compliance
As maritime freight rates fluctuate and regulations tighten , VELA offers a future-proof solution: no carbon quotas, no extra fees, and precise data for your ESG reporting.
We combine air freight–level service quality with the sustainability of wind-powered ocean shipping
. CO2 EMISSIONS
Audited by Carbone4, the Vela solution has demonstrated – through life cycle analysis – a lower carbon footprint than any other mode of transport over equivalent distances.
Its wide platform accommodates over 240 m² (2,583 sq ft) of solar panels, complemented by two hydro-generators beneath the hull. These systems convert wind and water energy into green electricity, enabling us to maintain temperature-controlled holds with minimal environmental impact.
. BIODIVERSITY
We have also eliminated the use of ballast tanks – a major source of marine pollution and unnecessary weight – while maximizing robustness and safety.
This trimaran is the only cargo sail vessel in the world without ballast, setting a new standard for protecting marine ecosystems.
VELA operates a unique transatlantic shipping line connecting the US directly to Europe in under two weeks, thanks to its 67-meter cargo trimaran — nicknamed the “airplane of the seas.” Inspired by offshore racing, this high-performance vessel is designed to optimize the supply chain while significantly reducing environmental and social impact. Specializing in the transport of high-value and sensitive goods, VELA ensures fast lead times, maximum cargo security, and a radically reduced carbon footprint.
“Echosens is a medical technology company that designs and manufactures diagnostic devices for liver disease screening. Our devices are shipped all over the world. The opportunity to transport them by sea — and especially by sailboat — immediately struck me as both compelling and perfectly aligned with our ambitious CSR goals. Today, we rely on air freight. By working with VELA, we’ll be able to significantly reduce our carbon footprint while supporting the growth of a company with a truly promising future. Today, it’s the U.S. — tomorrow, I hope, the entire world”
Dominique Legros, Group CEO Echosens
Damien Pellé, Group Sustainability Director, SMCP (Sandro, Maje, Claudie Pierlot, Fursac)
SMCP is proud to support the launch of VELA’s wind-powered shipping line. This initiative, driven by our teams on both sides of the Atlantic, will help us meet our carbon footprint reduction targets. Our climate strategy focuses primarily on lowering greenhouse gas emissions from product manufacturing and reducing our reliance on air transport.”
Stanislas Thiénot, CEO, ARVITIS
“At Champagne Thiénot, we are deeply rooted in tradition — but just as committed to innovation. That’s why our House is proud to support VELA – Sail For Goods. Starting in 2026, our cuvées will cross the Atlantic aboard a trimaran. This partnership reflects the bold spirit of our House: embracing the unexpected, stepping off the beaten path, and celebrating what makes us unique. We are proud to revive the adventure of wind-powered shipping while making a positive impact on the environment.”
